Ryszard Pusz is a renowned percussionist, widely acknowledged as Australia’s marimba master, and listed in the International Who’s Who of Music (11th Ed.) and the Who’s Who in Australasia and the Far East (1st Ed.). He is the recipient of two ‘Sounds Australia Awards’ for ‘Most Significant Contribution to the Presentation of Australian Music’, an Australia Council Fellowship to present Australian compositions overseas, and many Arts Grants from Government and Private bodies to advance the cause of percussion through commissions, performances, instrument building and cultural exchanges.

He introduced steelband and taiko to Australia, and steelband to the Middle East. He instituted the first nation-wide Festival and Workshops of Percussion in Australia, and established an ongoing series of concerts, workshops and masterclasses. He introduced percussion ensemble activity in schools throughout South Australia and at National Music Camp, Pan-Pacific Music Camp and Regional Music Camps.

He has had over 70 pieces written for him by composers here and overseas and has appeared as soloist and conductor with orchestras, percussion ensembles, choirs, dance groups, and theatre presentations in Australia, Europe, USA and Asia. He has developed some unique playing techniques on marimba and a variety of hand drums.

He has performed in International Festivals in Poland, Adelaide and Canada and in major music academies and concert halls throughout Europe, the USA, Australia, Asia and the Caribbean, and has worked in collaboration with filmmakers, theatre directors and visual artists to produce performance theatre events and music theatre, cinematic and theatrical productions. He has also produced and presented concerts with lighting and staging innovations.

He pioneered and developed the concept of teaching instrumental music by Distance Education mode, tutored at International Percussion Workshops, and was recently Head of Percussion for the private orchestra of the Sultan of Oman.

He has written tutors on Percussion and Rhythm, and composed and arranged for percussion solo and ensemble, and taiko and steelband. He has formed various percussion and chamber ensembles, and performed across a range of genres on the gamut of instruments in a multiplicity of contexts.
