Kerry Dull’s extensive educational background included teaching at the Portage School system, including the outer 4-6 grade program as well as the High School, Cudahy High School, and Carroll College in Wisconsin totaling twenty three years. Kerry’s involvement with NAJE included the founding of the Wisconsin/Minnesota Jazz Convention, planning of the IAJE national convention and editor of the newsletter during his term as president of the Wisconsin International Association of Jazz Educators. He has appeared as a clinician, guest soloist, and adjudicator for musical organizations throughout the Midwest and in the state of Florida. While in Wisconsin he was nominated Wisconsin State Jazz Educator of the Year, was a Wisconsin School Music Association for music competitions at the district and state level, Young Composers Contest judge, state planning committee and list selection, Master Adjudicator for State Marching competitions, State Honors Band judge, audition judge, saxophone section coach, field representative and coordinator and worked on the Wisconsin Honors Project. Kerry was the department chairman for the Cudahy music department for five years where he was involved in curriculum development and supervised student teachers as well as receiving the Midwest National Band and Orchestra Medal of Honor, letter of recognition for having an outstanding and model program from WSMA, State Representative Jazz Ensemble, State Champion Marching Bands. Kerry taught at Carroll College from 1993-1996 where he was the director of jazz studies. He initiated and organized a jazz festival with guest artists and the college jazz ensemble and jazz combos as well as established performance tours. All during his teaching career he also gave private clinics on theory and jazz improvisation. He composed jazz warm-up techniques for improvisation that were so successful the directors saw immediate results in their students. The private performances never ceased for this ’daring to be less than dull’ man as well since he was running a nine piece rhythm & blues band and composing music for it, an eighteen piece big band, and a jazz quintet. In 1997 he established a Praise band in Florida, worked towards his doctorate degree and began writing contemporary praise music there where he owned and operated Classic Studios ( ) with his wife Dian. Recently deceased, Kerry Dull’s philosophies and teaching techniques have influenced and impacted the students he touched and by the numerous letters of recognition from them in his passing, they have assimilated it and used it in their teaching or with their children.
