Ian Brekke

Music listing
Ian Brekke spent his childhood in Minneapolis, MN, and it was there he discovered his passion for music at a very young age with an immediate and demanding need to play the violin at age five. Using his early experience on a string instrument, he quickly took to singing in school and church choirs by the third grade. He was active in these choirs through high school, and also added All-State Choirs from sixth grade onward as well as his high school vocal jazz ensemble by age 14. After graduating from high school Ian relocated to Creston, Iowa to study with Phil Mattson at Southwestern Community College’s School for Music Vocations. It was here that he gained a solid foundation in both classical and jazz theory, arranging, studio work, ear training, conducting, rehearsal techniques, and private lessons for voice and piano. As a two-year member of the award winning vocal jazz groups “Audio Radiance” and “First Take”, Ian is featured on the newest First Take album “Journey Home”.

Ian is currently finishing (Spring 2009) his Undergraduate Jazz Studies degree at Sacramento State University under the direction of Kerry Marsh and instruction of Julia Dollison. He is a 2009 recipient of the Student Downbeat Award in the jazz arranging category for his vocal arrangement of Geoffrey Keezer’s “Port Alexander Moon”, and is currently writing and arranging for the upcoming vocal group “Bridge To Nowhere”. Ian plans to pursue a Masters degree of Music in Jazz Education in the fall of 2010.
