SHAWN PURCELL is a Jazz guitarist, bandleader, arranger, composer and educator. An accomplished musician, Purcell is active as a featured soloist with small ensembles, Jazz big bands. Purcell received a Bachelor of Arts from Duquesne University and upon graduating spent 2 years touring as the staff guitarist for Ringling Bros. and Barnum and Bailey Circus. Upon leaving Ringling Bros., Purcell auditioned and won a slot as the guitarist in the United States Air Force premiere Jazz Band, The Airmen of Note, based in Washington D.C. During his eight years with "The Note" Purcell performed countless nationwide venues including major music festivals IAJE and PASIC. Overseas venues include Germany, Turkey, the Azores, Oman, Qatar, United Arab Emirates, Italy, Kuwait and Bahrain. Purcell has shared the stage with many of the world’s top Jazz artists including Jim Pugh, Chip McNeill, Jeanie Bryson, Dana Hall, Chip Stephens, Larry Gray, Eddie Daniels, Chuck Redd, Gene Ludwig, Bob Berg, James Moody, Kevin Mahogany, Jerry Bergonzi, Pat Coil, Steve Allee, and many others. Purcell has been on the Jazz faculty at George Mason University, Middle Tennessee State University and Tennessee State University and is an in-demand clinician leading Master Classes at Brigham Young University, Southern Illinois University and Millikin University. Purcell has also been on faculty for The National Guitar Workshop since 2006 and just recently became a columnist for Jazz Guitar Life, an online resource dedicated to the jazz guitar, writing a monthly column “The Total Jazz Guitarist.” Purcell received his Master of Arts in Jazz Studies from Middle Tennessee State University and is currently working on his Doctor of Musical Arts at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign where he was the Jazz Guitar Graduate Teaching Assistant. Purcell endorses D’Addario strings and Weber VST speakers and can be heard on Chip McNeill’s upcoming CD The Whirl (scheduled for release this winter) as well as Jazz vocalist, Darden Purcell’s debut CD Easy Living, which was released late 2009.
