Frederic Goldbaum

Music listing
Fredric J. Goldbaum

Fred was nurtured from infancy with a love of music, especially to the rhythm of a march. Hearing Sousa’s ‘King Cotton’ played on the radio was ‘love at first sight’. Music, so it seemed to this six year old, couldn’t get much better than that.

Fred played alto sax in the Burlingame (CA) High School band, where as a soloist he was honored with ‘superior’ awards in California state-wide band festivals. He also played saxophone in a dance band which won first place recognition in an all-state competition. Entering the University of California he was an active member of the marching and concert bands serving as an officer of the band and achieving the coveted ‘bandsman of the year’ award. There he came under the tutelage of Dr. James Berdahl, Director of Bands and Jon Elkus, Student Director who later achieved prominence as a composer and university band director.

Fred was admitted to Phi Beta Kappa. After earning a BA degree from Berkeley, he went on to obtain an MS in Computer Science from the University of Colorado. He pursued careers in religious education, serving as Headmaster of the San Diego Hebrew Day School and subsequently as a computer systems analyst where he held key positions in Gates Rubber Co., Denver and Motorola, Israel. However his love for music followed him wherever he went, specifically manifesting itself in his avocation of composing. Fred turned out numerous songs to mark family events and other special occasions but above all he conceived original march compositions for band.

The time had come to share these compositions with other admirers of good band music. Bob Calonico, current director of the University of California Bands, provided needed encouragement which brought ‘ The Taunter’ to fruition. He teamed Goldbaum with M.Parunyan, a promising young arranger. Working closely together they created the final score. ‘The Taunter’ is expected to be the first in a series of marches to be released in the near future.
