Omar Cherry

Omar is a native of Sanford, Florida. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Jazz Studies from Florida A and M University, a Master of Music in Composition from Indiana University and is currently studying for a Doctor of Arts degree in Music Theory and Composition‐with secondary emphasis in saxophone performance‐at Ball State University. Omar has received training in both Jazz and European Classical musical traditions. A multi‐instrumentalist with an eclectic performance background, Omar specializes in saxophone and piano. He has performed with Leon Anderson, Jeff Rupert, Danny Walsh, Pam Laws, Vince Gardner, Scotty Barnhart, and others. Mr. Cherry was the recipient of the Northeast Florida Jazz Foundationís Jeep Memorial Scholarship in 2005 and a performer in the 2009 African American Jazz Caucusís HBCU All Star Big Band in New York. In 2009 he also had the honor of performing with the South Bend Symphonic Choir as piano accompanist in the White House for a Christmas Celebration in 2009. He has written works for orchestra, mixed chorus, jazz band, jazz combo, solo instruments, and various chamber ensembles.
