Description “Columbia, the Gem of the Ocean” was written by David Shaw and Thomas Beckett in 1843. It was extremely popular during the Civil War and was one of Abraham Lincoln’s favorites. The term “Columbia” (derived from Columbus) was used to refer to our country while we were still the 13 colonies and for many years was used as another name for The United States. The song’s first verse is: O, Columbia! The gem of the ocean, The home of the brave and the free, The shrine of each patriot’s devotion A world offers homage to thee. Thy mandates make heroes assemble When Liberty’s form stands in view; Thy banners make tyranny tremble When borne by the Red, White and Blue! When borne by the Red, White and Blue! When borne by the Red, White and Blue! Thy banners make tyranny tremble When borne by the Red, White and Blue!
