||"The Eye Opener" by Chris Gallaher is a wonderful bit of ensemble writing with many of the standard jazz patterns and rhythms displayed. This is a great chart to solidify your student’s understanding of the jazz language. Up tempo swing. Uses two tenors and two trumpets as the melodic statement group. Nice open solo section with backgrounds for either brass or reed solos. Surprize beginning. The opening dissonance shouts out the title and serves as a lead-in to a great, up-tempo, swing chart. Solo features modal scale “goose-egged” for the use of the improviser. Great section writing and a “half-time” ending to add interest and variety.
