||"Simple Gifts" is a Shaker song written and composed in 1848 by Elder Joseph Brackett, while he was at the Shaker community in Alfred, Maine. The song was unknown outside of Shaker communities until it became world famous when Copland used it in his Appalachian Spring of 1944. This brass quintet arrangement was written in the form of a fantasy based upon the melody. After much reharmonization and motivic development, the piece reaches a climax with the trombone and tuba playing the first part of the melody, while the trumpets and horn play the second half of the melody in augmentation. Trumpet 1 range goes up to B-flat above the staff.
