||Three Latin Jazz Miniatures (for trombone, piano, bass and percussion; commissioned by Anthony Williams in 2016)
Three Latin Jazz Miniatures is a mini-suite consisting of three contrasting settings of Afro-Caribbean dance rhythms. A mournful prelude, permeated by call-and-response figures, introduces a lively mambo which is set, atypically, in triple meter. The middle movement is a slow, hauntingly lyrical bolero, but in 7/4 meter. The exploration of traditional Latin rhythmic structures in atypical meters was a primary compositional objective. Concluding the work is an energetic guaguancó, whose bright, major modality provides a welcome contrast, emotionally and rhythmically.
