House of Illusion...Bridge Akiko Pavolka $15.00 Akiko Pavolka’s House Of Illusion plays jazz with a rock attitude and elements of funk, Latin, electronica and Japanese Enka Music thrown into the mix. Their new album, Bridge (NCM East Records, NCM 40116), captures the raw energy and creativity of their live shows. Imagine the soundtrack to the greatest film you’ve never seen that exists only inside our minds. A forlorn clown dances on a Coney Island beach, a nervous ladybug reflects upon the nature of desire, a laughing woman meets her destiny in the darkness of the city. House Of Illusion weaves a rich tapestry of musical textures using all the elements of their collective experience. Voices, strings, woodwinds, keyboards, accordions and electronics swirl over a deep rhythmic foundation of bass and drums, with Akiko’s vocals at the center of it all. Her compositions provide the framework for the band’s explorations. "She is a gifted singer with a natural yet characteristic voice and a talent for writing eccentric and attractive music and lyrics…her interpretation is fresh and full of originality" (Yukinori Omura, Swing Journal). House Of Illusion came into being in 1998 with the release of their self-titled debut recording (NCM 40113). They have headlined twice at the Yokohama Promenade Festival (in 1998 and 2001) and toured Japan, performing in jazz and rock venues in Tokyo, Yokohama, Kyoto and Kobe. They perform regularly in the New York Area and can be seen in venues such as CB’s Gallery, Detour, Cobi’s Place, The Brecht Forum and The Knitting Factory. "Their open-ended compositions, raw improvisational style and unique approach to group interaction draw the listener into a musical labyrinth…not to be missed" (Knitting Factory Notes).

Signature Series-Steve Houghton Steve Houghton $15.00 "The initial concept was to bring together different trios, because I think my favorite setting is the Bill Evans-style acoustic piano trio," Houghton explains. "Then the idea was to add people from there." With Steve houghton anchoring every tune from his drum kit, the album includes three basic trios: one featuring guitarist Larry Koonse and bassist Tom Warrington; another with vibist Emil Richards and Warrington; and a third with pianist Billy Childs and bassist Marc johnson. When the pieces called for fleshing out from the front line, saxophonist Rob Lockhart, trumpeter Tim Hagans and trombonist Andy Martin were called in. Consequently, the album flows through a multiplicity of moods and textures while the essential "feel" is eminating from Houghton’s drums.
Windsong Steve Houghton $15.00 "Windsong" is resonant, instructive and inspiring. It is bold, too, for its surgically sharp sense of proportion and balance. On this CD Steve Houghton expresses his values about percussion and drums. Although he is indeed on numerous recordings, none has truly documented his arc of musical involvement until "Windsong". Highly recommended!

Rude, Crude, and Poor Larry Heagle $15.00 Notes by Larry Heagle: When I first sought a title for this CD, the word "doggerel," a Shakespearean word meaning "bad verse" came to mind. I checked it in the dictionary, and the first definition was the perfect title for this conglomeration of 11 novelty songs that I have written over a span of 20 years. Listen at your own risk.
Irish Heart Larry Heagle $15.00 Notes by Tom Johnson: "Irish Heart" is a distillation of Larry Heagle’s life, and not every life story song is a funny one. Sometimes a tune contains a tear or two. This (CD) is a compilation of the songs he has created over a long period of time. Among them are: love songs for his wife Kim; a lament for a young friend; a rousing tune about the vast yacht-like Oldsmobile of his youth; and, curiously, a celebration of a former Attorney General of the United States.
