House of Illusion...Bridge Akiko Pavolka $15.00 Akiko Pavolka’s House Of Illusion plays jazz with a rock attitude and elements of funk, Latin, electronica and Japanese Enka Music thrown into the mix. Their new album, Bridge (NCM East Records, NCM 40116), captures the raw energy and creativity of their live shows. Imagine the soundtrack to the greatest film you’ve never seen that exists only inside our minds. A forlorn clown dances on a Coney Island beach, a nervous ladybug reflects upon the nature of desire, a laughing woman meets her destiny in the darkness of the city. House Of Illusion weaves a rich tapestry of musical textures using all the elements of their collective experience. Voices, strings, woodwinds, keyboards, accordions and electronics swirl over a deep rhythmic foundation of bass and drums, with Akiko’s vocals at the center of it all. Her compositions provide the framework for the band’s explorations. "She is a gifted singer with a natural yet characteristic voice and a talent for writing eccentric and attractive music and lyrics…her interpretation is fresh and full of originality" (Yukinori Omura, Swing Journal). House Of Illusion came into being in 1998 with the release of their self-titled debut recording (NCM 40113). They have headlined twice at the Yokohama Promenade Festival (in 1998 and 2001) and toured Japan, performing in jazz and rock venues in Tokyo, Yokohama, Kyoto and Kobe. They perform regularly in the New York Area and can be seen in venues such as CB’s Gallery, Detour, Cobi’s Place, The Brecht Forum and The Knitting Factory. "Their open-ended compositions, raw improvisational style and unique approach to group interaction draw the listener into a musical labyrinth…not to be missed" (Knitting Factory Notes).

Rude, Crude, and Poor Larry Heagle $15.00 Notes by Larry Heagle: When I first sought a title for this CD, the word "doggerel," a Shakespearean word meaning "bad verse" came to mind. I checked it in the dictionary, and the first definition was the perfect title for this conglomeration of 11 novelty songs that I have written over a span of 20 years. Listen at your own risk.

Signature Series-Steve Houghton Steve Houghton $15.00 "The initial concept was to bring together different trios, because I think my favorite setting is the Bill Evans-style acoustic piano trio," Houghton explains. "Then the idea was to add people from there." With Steve houghton anchoring every tune from his drum kit, the album includes three basic trios: one featuring guitarist Larry Koonse and bassist Tom Warrington; another with vibist Emil Richards and Warrington; and a third with pianist Billy Childs and bassist Marc johnson. When the pieces called for fleshing out from the front line, saxophonist Rob Lockhart, trumpeter Tim Hagans and trombonist Andy Martin were called in. Consequently, the album flows through a multiplicity of moods and textures while the essential "feel" is eminating from Houghton’s drums.
Signing Geoffrey Keezer $15.00 The Joe Locke/Geoffrey Keezer Group is a perfect match, balancing the wide musical interests of two leaders who are also formidable composers and performers. Joining them are two up-and-coming young artists who’ve been on the national jazz scene for over a decade apiece, drummer Terreon Gully (who made his mark recording with Stefon Harris, Jacky Terrasson, and Lizz Wright) plus bassist Mike Pope (who recorded with Chuck Loeb, Stefan Karlsson, and Bill Bruford, among others). The quartet mostly focuses on originals by the co-leaders, with Keezer sometimes incorporating electric keyboards and Pope alternating between electric and acoustic basses. Keezer’s tense "Darth Alexis" produces plenty of fireworks with explosive solos and his striking blend of acoustic and electric keyboards. The vibraphonist’s refreshing arrangement of John Coltrane’s "Naima" adds an unusual countermelody with the theme stripped down and initially hidden in the background, then spacing it out in an irregular manner. Keezer’s setting of British singer/songwriter Imogen Heap’s "Hide and Seek" is a transcription of her a cappella recording, with his electric keyboards providing a hip accompaniment for Locke’s sparse vibraphone. The pianist takes center stage in his glistening "Terraces," a piece full of surprising twists. While Joe Locke and Geoff Keezer both lead individual groups of their own, the occasional opportunity for them to join forces is guaranteed to produce memorable music. ~ Ken Dryden

When Lights are Low (W/Denise Donatelli) Geoffrey Keezer $15.00 When Lights are Low Denise Donatelli | Savant Records (2010)

By EDWARD BLANCO br
Track Listing: It’s You or No One; Don’t Explain; When Lights are Low; Big Lie, Small World; Why Did I Choose You; I Wish I Were In Love Again; Kisses (Cantor da noite); Forward, Like So; The Telephone Song; The Bed I Made; Enchantment (Firm Roots).

Personnel: Denise Donatelli: vocals; Geoffrey Keezer: piano, Fender Rhodes; Peter Sprague: guitar; Hamilton Price: bass; Jon Wikan: drums, percussion, pandeiro ( 9 ); Susan Wulf: double bass (2, 7); Giovani Clayton: cello (2, 7); Rolando Kato: viola (2, 7) ; Alma Lisa Fernandez: viola (2, 7) ; Matthew Duckles: viola (2, 7) ; Julia Dollison: vocals (4, 10); Kerry Marsh: vocals (4, 10); Ingred Jensen: flugelhorn (2); Phil O’Connor: bass clarinet (4, 10); Ron Blake: tenor saxophone (3), soprano saxophone (7).

Style: Modern Jazz Commanding a soothing, lush voice capable of tenderizing the lyrics of any song, Denise Donatelli does a wonderful job on When Light are Low, a collaboration with friend and musical director Geoffrey Keezer. The album has received two Grammy nominations, one of which is for "Best Vocal Jazz Album," leaving no doubt that this is indeed an exceptional recording. The other Grammy nod is for "Best Instrumental Arrangement Accompanying A Vocalist," for Keezer’s arrangement of Billie Holiday’s classic, "Don’t Explain." Iin addition to producing and arranging, Keezer also performs on piano, and crafts a variety of instrumental combinations in support of Donatelli, including trumpet , saxophone and rhythm section; a vocal choir; guitar and percussion; solo piano; and string quintet. Fronting a quartet featuring guitarist Peter Sprague, Donatelli kicks the music off with a swinging rendition of "It’s You or No One," spicing it up with some appreciable scatting. On "Don’t Explain," the vocalist shows her softer side, emotionally delivering its lyrics, with Sprague and guest flugelhonist Ingrid Jensen providing splendid accompaniment.

The title track is especially brilliant, surrendering an outstanding sound that features Ron Blake on a series of burnished tenor solos. The strings and background vocals come to the forefront on Sting’s pop song "Big Lie, Small World," while Keezer and Donatelli perform a delicious duet on "Why Did I Choose You," perhaps a reference as to why these two are such a sparkling musical force. "The Telephone Song," sung as a bossa, delivers a nice buzz and features Sprague, and Jon Wikan on pandeiro. Other notable tracks include "Forward, Like So" and Cedar Walton’s "Enchantment (Firm Roots)," wrapping up a special album from a special vocalist.

The Keezer-Donatelli collaboration proves to be a winning combination once again as the Grammy attention about When Lights are Low most certainly affirms. There are no low lights here, as Denise Donatelli’s star continues to rise and, with this recording, shine brightly.
