James M. Gallagher is the middle child of a musical family. As a youth, he toured with the Kids From Wisconsin show troupe. He studied music at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, where he received a Bachelor of Music Education degree in 1979. He was a percussion student of Ron Keezer and an arranging student of Dominic Spera and John Radd. After receiving hisdegree, Mr. Gallagher has taught instrumental music for the Wisconsin school districts of Eau Clare, Elkhorn and Arcadia.
Mr. Gallagher is the founder and current leader of the Prime Time Big Band (an Eau Claire, WI based rehearsal band) and remains active as a teacher, performer, composer, arranger and shamelessly indulges his love of the music of Duke Ellington and Count Basie.
