Frank Mantooth, a dear friend of RGM, passed away in 2004 at age 56. Too early ! We miss him and his talent and his humor.
Frank Mantooth was a pianist, composer, arranger, clinician and educator residing in Garden City, Kansas. He was the Composer in Residence at Wasburn University in Topeka Kansas. Frank’s four albums, "Suite Tooth," "Persevere," "Dangerous Percedent" and "Sophisticated Lady" have earned a total of nine Grammy nominations in both writing and playing categories.
As an author, Frank has published The Best Chord Changes for the World’s Greatest Standards Vols. 1-5 for the Hal Leonard Corporation. This is in addition to over 150 works for combo and jazz ensemble which have been published with five major publishing houses since 1978. Also recently published are a beginning imporvisation method with accompanying play along CDs, a Christmas anthology for solo piano and the landmark treatise on chord construction, Voicings for Jazz Keyboard which has currently sold over 20,000 copies since its debut in 1987.
Frank taught at numerous summer jazz camps and in residence at various universities and high schools. Recent writing commissions have come from the Kanasas City Symphony, the Madison Symphony Orchestra Doc Severinsen, Pete Christlieb, Louie Bellson and the Airmen of Note.
Just released on the Seabreeze label is Frank’s latest CD project, “A Miracle” which featues Pete Christlieb, Kevin Mahogany, Diane Schuur, Pat LaBarbera, Bobby Shew, Kim Park and other jazz artists.
Frank Mantooth passed away in Jan., 2004. We all miss him greatly.
