Barry D. Lake

Music listing
Barry D. Lake took lessons on drum kit at age 18. Almost as soon as he began learning he started taking jobs in local bands by filling in for drummers. He was soon working regularly and took as many jobs as possible to gain experience in performing. He played in jazz groups, big bands, brass bands, concert bands, dance bands and also entered a number of band competitions. Barry decided to further his musical knowledge and technique by studying at the Elder Conservatorium under Richard Smith who was then the principal percussionist in the South Australian Symphony Orchestra. (Now known as the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra.) His studies introduced him to a wider range of percussion instruments and orchestral work. Initially he worked in pit orchestras playing timpani, kit and general percussion. He played in both the South Australian Symphony Orchestra and the Elizabethan Theatre Trust Orchestra. He later moved into the jazz scene and began playing vibraphone in jazz groups. During this time he gave private tuition. This continued for a number of years until he joined the Education Department where he taught in secondary schools as a classroom teacher. As well as teaching drum kit and general percussion he ran many bands and ensembles within the school system. Almost all of the arrangements he used were written by him to suit the various levels of students he was teaching at the time. While with the Education Department he took a course at the then Western Teachers College and successfully studied music theory, composition and history. While studying there he played in the college concert band and stage band under the direction of the M.D. Hal Hall. He also studied flute and took the appropriate exams. Barry continued teaching in secondary schools until ill health forced him to retire. However, he decided to offer private tuition again and during this time formed drum corps and percussion ensembles for which he wrote the music. He then decided to put some of the pieces he had written for drum corps and percussion ensembles into book form. Most of these have been used in his drum corps. Barry’s primary interest is music education and he continues to compose and arrange new pieces for his current students as well as his series of new books. He strives to help both students and teachers derive enjoyment and benefit from music education.
