Ryan Cullen was born on February 2, 1978 in Metairie, Louisiana, and began his formal musical training at age 5. In his elementary years, he had the opportunity to study numerous instruments (with emphasis in piano) in both the classical and jazz traditions at the River Ridge Music School in New Orleans, LA, from which he graduated in 1996. From 1996-2000, Ryan studied piano with Michael Pellera, composition/arranging with John Mahoney and improvisation with Tony Dagradi and John Ellis at the Loyola University of New Orleans College of Music where in August, 2000, he completed his B.M. degree (magna cum laude) in Jazz Studies. From 1998-1999, Ryan established RYCUN Music Company to promote his catalogue of original works. His music has earned him local recognition and has also been heard internationally both through the air waves and during the 2000 IAJE (International Association for Jazz Education) Convention. Ryan also has several scores published through Really Good Music, LLC. and is a member of The American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers (ASCAP). As an active jazz pianist, Ryan has been working with a contemporary jazz trio called ABIEA. They recently released their debut album and perform regularly around the Greater New Orleans area. Mr. Cullen currently serves as the Coordinator of Jazz and Composition Studies at the River Ridge Music School where he has been teaching since 1992. He is the director of the school’s concert and jazz bands and is an instructor of traditional and jazz piano, saxophone, and theory/composition. Ryan Cullen currently resides in Southeast Louisiana and was recently appointed Director at the Louisiana Academy of Performing Arts (LAAPA). In addition to his administrative duties, he writes for and directs the school’s ensembles, teaches theory/composition, piano and saxophone.  Ryan’s music is additionally published through RYCUN Music Company and PdfJazzMusic.com and has been sold and performed worldwide.  Cullen holds a M.M. degree in Studio/Jazz Composition from the University of Miami and a B.M. degree in jazz piano performance from Loyola University of New Orleans. Ryan is a member of The American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers (ASCAP).
