Paul Schaleger

Paul Schaleger was born in Minneapolis and moved to St. Paul stopping along the way in New York, Hawaii, Iowa, California, Wisconsin, Texas, and Arizona. Studying piano, clarinet, and recorder in his pre-college days in Hawaii, he went on to earn his bachelorís degree in music from Coe College and an MA from Mills College, where his thesis composition was an interactive piece for bass clarinet and a computer controlled Buchla digital synthesizer. His teachers include Nancy Van de Vate, Jerry Owen, David Rosenboom, and Terry Riley.

Paul took a sabbatical from writing music for a number years, working at various times as a sound engineer, †librarian, and computer systems engineer. He earned a masters degree in Library and Information Science from the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee. †He resumed composing in 1997 and has had his work performed in numerous locations.

For his day job, Paul works as a technical manager for an e-commerce company in the Twin Cities and currently resides in St. Paul with his wife, Dr. Beverly Dretzke, and their cats Sabina, Minnie, and Frankie. Paul and Beverly have studied recorder with Clea Galhano and frequently perform at Twin Cities venues . He has a son who is completing his bachelorís degree at the University of Minnesota.
