Eric Schmitz is Associate Professor of Jazz Studies at SUNY Oswego, where he directs the Oswego State Jazz Ensemble and Latin Jazz Ensemble, co-leads and performs with the Oswego Jazz Project, and teaches jazz and rock history, improvisation, and music theory and composition. In May 2008, he completed his Doctorate of Musical Arts in Jazz Studies and Contemporary Media at the Eastman School of Music, where he studied jazz composition with Bill Dobbins and Fred Sturm, and jazz drumset with Rich Thompson. He also earned the Diploma in Ethnomusicology at Eastman and performed with the school’s gamelan Lila Muni for two years. He has lectured on music and given performances at universities in the United States as well as in Havana, Cuba and Kielce, Poland. Eric’s pieces have been performed in Iowa, Oregon, New York City, and throughout upstate New York. In 2004 he won the Jazz Band Classic FIRST MUSIC 21 Commission Competition, for which he received a commission to write an original jazz work for big band (Separate Ways). He is the recipient of two Downbeat awards: “Best Jazz Arrangement” for his studio orchestra arrangement of Harold Danko’s For Bud in 2003 and “Original Composition – Best Song” for his big band piece In Your World in 2004. He is currently working on new jazz compositions and pursuing an interest in the music of Cuba, Brazil and New Orleans. He and his wife Natalia reside in Oswego, upstate New York.
