Dr. Kevin Kjos is Associate Professor of trumpet and Director of Jazz Studies at Kutztown University of Pennsylvania. As Director of the highly regarded Kutztown Jazz Studies Area, Dr. Kjos coordinates the activities of a jazz faculty comprised of some of the country’s leading jazz musicians; the KU Jazz and Lunch series, an outreach program that brings area junior and senior high schools to KU for clinics and rehearsal observations; the Jazz Masters Series that brings on campus for clinics and concerts internationally recognized artists like the Count Basie Orchestra and Joe Lovano; and an on-campus recording program with engineer Paul Wickliffe, owner of the legendary Skyline Recording Studios, that produces a CD each year that is distributed by Sea Breeze Records in Pismo Beach, California. Other duties at KU include directing Jazz Ensembles I, II, and III, teaching applied trumpet, Jazz Improvisation and Jazz History.

Kutztown University Jazz Studies has grown considerably during Dr. Kjos’ 12 years as Director of Jazz Studies. From a partial jazz ensemble that met one night a week, the program now features three full big bands that meet 3 hours per week during regular academic hours. The jazz faculty has grown from one “do-everything” faculty member to specialists on all the instruments found in the big band. Under his direction, KU Jazz Ensemble I has been invited to perform at the Kennedy Center, the MENC Conference, Gerald Veasley’s Jazz Base, the Berks Jazz Festival, and has performed with Bob Mintzer, Michael Davis, Ingrid Jensen, Allison Miller, Rachel Z, Scott Wendholt, Matt Neiss,and many others.

A native of White Bear Lake, Minnesota, Kjos founded the Cedar Avenue Big Band in Twin Cities in 1985, a band he led until leaving for the University Of Wisconsin-Eau Claire in 1989 for his Master’s Degree in Trumpet Performance. It was at UWEC that Kjos studied trumpet and jazz studies from master pedagogues Robert Baca and Ron Keezer. Upon graduation, Kjos led the Carleton College Jazz Ensemble and served as instructor of jazz ensembles III and IV at UWEC. He later received Doctor of Music degree in Brass Pedagogy and Jazz Studies at the the Indiana University School of Music in Bloomington, Indiana where he studied with jazz pedagogy legends David Baker and Dominic Spera and studied trumpet with John Rommel and William Adam. After leaving IU, Kevin directed the jazz ensembles at the University of Minnesota – Moorhead before leaving for his current position as Director of Jazz Studies at Kutztown University of Pennsylvania where he lives with his wife Shelly.
