Mark DeSimone

Mark DeSimone is an active trombonist, composer and arranger in the San Francisco Bay Area. He was awarded Honorable Mention in the 2011 ASCAP Foundation Young Jazz Composer Awards for his Jazz orchestra composition, "Mind Meld." (Available here at RGM)

As a trombonist he is a member of Emperor Nortonís Jazz Band and the San Jose Jazz Orchestra. He received a Masterís in composition from San Jose State University and a BM in trombone from California State University, Northridge, where he studied trombone with Bill Booth and learned Jazz arranging from Matt Harris. He was lead orchestrator and sound engineer for the animated musical film "Bye Bye Bin-Laden," and as a member of the San Jose Jazz Orchestra. He is an active writer and arranger of modern big band Jazz. He recently formed the Mark DeSimone Sextet in order to explore modern Jazz, hip-hop, funk, and fusion.

DeSimone also writes classical music and electronica. His influences come from many idioms and periods, and include Dmitri Shostakovich, Juan Garcia Esquivel, Fred Sturm, Maria Schneider, Dave Holland, J.S. Bach, Richard D. James/Aphex Twin, and so on. His aim is to avoid the well-trodden paths of genre and convention while not leaving the audience behind in the process.
