Sophie-Carmen Eckhardt-Gramatté, born Sofia (Sonia) Fridman- Kochevskaya on 6 January 1899 in Moskow, Russia, was a composer, pianist, violinist and teacher. She studied composition with Vincent d’Indy, Camille Chevillard and Max Trapp, and dedicated herself almost exclusively to composing after 1935, amassing a catalogue of nearly two hundred works. She married painter Walter Gramatté in 1920; after his death in 1929, she remarried art historian and journalist Ferdinand Eckhardt in 1934. They relocated to Winnipeg, Canada, in 1953. Sophie died on 2 December 1974 in Stuttgart, Germany, as the result of an accident.
