Mr. Hanke is a native of Lomira, Wisconsin. After receiving his undergraduate degree from UW Oshkosh in 1972, he began his teaching career in the Hortonville School District. His Slinger tenure began in 1976 when he was hired as the director of the Slinger Middle School Band. In 1981 he transferred to the high school where he directed the concert band, jazz ensemble II and assisted with the marching and pep bands. In 1987 he assumed the head position at the high school. Mr. Hanke received his master’s degree in Arts in Education from Marian College. |
During his tenure at Slinger, the marching band received high accolades for their performances at Lambeau Field, Camp Randall Stadium, the Milwaukee Mile, The World of Music Festival, numerous performances at Disneyland and Disney World and many local and regional festivals. In 2001 the Marching Band was chosen as the sole representative of the State of Wisconsin to perform for the 54th Presidential Inaugural Parade. In 2003 the SHS band was chosen to perform for the prestigious Hollywood Christmas Parade. 2004 brought more accolades to the band as it was chosen to perform in the Chicago States Street Thanksgiving Day Parade. The Slinger Band performed in November of 2006 and in 2011 for the 65th and 70th anniversary of the bombing of Pearl Harbor and they performed in the Waikiki Holiday Parade. In addition in 2009 they performed for the 2009 London New Years Day Parade.
His Wind Ensemble has also received high accolades for excellence in performance. They have performed on numerous occasions at a variety of prestigious local, regional and national festival where they received top honors or won best band awards.
Slinger High School Jazz Ensemble I has a long and storied tradition of success over the past thirty seven-seven years. The band has won numerous best band awards at the UW Eau Claire, UW Green Bay, UW Whitewater and UW La Crosse Jazz Festivals. In 1989 they received the best band award at the World of Music Festival in Nashville, Tennessee. The jazz ensemble has had the privilege of performing for and with such great jazz artists as Dr. Billy Taylor, Laura Caviani, Ron Carter, Geoff Keezer, Cab Calloway, Bily Barnard, Rany Lee, Dominic Spera, the Count Basie Orchestra, the Miami Sax Quartet, among others. Jazz I proudly performed for the fifty-Sixth American School Band Directors Association Convention in Brookfield, WI.
Mr. Hanke retired in June of 2012 after a forty-year career as a music educator. He was chosen as a Paul Harris Fellow in 2006. In addition he was chosen "Teacher of the Year" in 1998. He also served the American School Band Directors Association as the State of Wisconsin Chair, the Regional Chair and was a member of the ASBDA Board of Directors He is an active trumpet player adjudicator and author. He has had several articles published in “The Instrumentalist” and continues to write. advise, and advocate on issues of music education.
