Bernie Schlafke

Bernie Schlafke is a local music and language (German, Spanish) educator and musician, based in Madison, Wisconsin. He performs locally with UW Madrigal Singers, Isthmus Vocal Ensemble, Solidarity Sing Along, various folk groups, and for occasional choral projects and open mics. He teaches German and Spanish privately to adults, and English through singing with daycare toddlers.

While growing up in Green Bay, Bernie learned to play piano, trumpet, and saxophone, and added voice and theory while studying music and jazz at UWs in Green Bay, LaCrosse, Madison, and as a guest student in Regensburg, where he performed with the Regensburger Kammerchor for two years.

Bernie earned degrees in language education in German and Spanish from UW-Madison and UW-LaCrosse, and spent summers as a counselor, guide, teacher, and song leader at Bear Paw Scout Camp and the Concordia Language Villages in the Northwoods of Wisconsin and Minnesota. His publications include Three Alpine Carols for Christmas (1995) and TPRS and the Songs of Waldsee (2005). As an avid naturalist and environmental activist, Bernie improvises harmonies and plays guitar for the noontime Solidarity Sing Along protests weekdays at the Capitol in Madison.
