Dr. Brian Claxton is a talented and versatile musician currently based in Greeley, Colorado. Claxton, who is currently thirty years old has been playing drums his entire life. His musical journey began on a small toy drum at one year old which his parent upgraded to a toy drum set they found on the shelf of an antique store when he was only four years old. His musical passion continued to deepen throughout elementary school, middle, and high school while growing up in the very small and rural town of Pepin, Wisconsin. Although he didnít have a private teacher, Claxton managed to teach himself and learn his college audition music by ear, which earned him a spot at the University of Wisconsin- Eau Claire for a Bachelors in Music Performance Degree.|
While at Eau Claire, Claxton worked his way up to eventually playing in the top ensembles and winning a Downbeat Award for Best Undergraduate Large Jazz Ensemble while playing with UW-Eau Claire Jazz 1. It was also during this time that Claxton began to establish a reputation in the Minneapolis/ St. Paul Twin Cities jazz scene while freelancing with such groups as the John Raymond Project, The Aaron Hedenstrom Jazz Orchestra and Quartet, Nachito Herrera, and others.
Driven by his passion to improve and deepen his knowledge, Claxton moved to Greeley, Colorado to pursue a Master of Music Degree and a Doctorate of Arts Degree in Jazz Studies at the University of Northern Colorado.
While still a student at UNC, Claxton was honored to be recruited by jazz legend Monty Alexander to play in his Harlem Kingston Express Band at the recommendation of jazz legend Jeff Hamilton. Claxton has also had the distinct pleasure to accompany guest artists such as: Donny McCaslin, Chris Potter, Christian McBride, Dave Douglas, Jeff Coffin, Terrell Stafford, Nicholas Payton, John Fedchock, Jiggs Whiggham, Paul McKee, Cyrus Chestnut, Geoff Keezer, Wayne Bergeron, Eric Marienthal, Dave Weckl, Bobby Sanabria, Greg Gisbert, Jon Faddis, Kenni Holmen, and many more.
