Serenade was composed in 1994, was performed by Musical Diversions Society in St. Louis, received Honorable Mention in the Morton Gould Composer Competition of the Bergen NJ Music Festival in 1996, and was premiered professionally in 2001 by Jay Fishman and the Minnesota Sinfonia. The 9-minute, three-movement miniature is a melodious and romantically conceived composition drawing on the musical styles of Brahms, Copland, Bernstein, Hindemith, and Vaughan Williams. The playful second movement, Pizzjazz, is in mixed meter with offbeat pizzicato rhythms. The final movement, Gloria, utilizes a powerful rhythm in mixed meter and is rich with romantic melodies. |
