An instrumental melody akin to Freddie Green’s "Corner Pocket","Gone Home", written by Andrew Neesley, is a tune echoing the swing and strut of the Count Basie Orchestra.
Conceived in 2001, the tune begins with a swinging, rising melody in the saxes. The bridge breaks into a four-part, small group orchestration after which the A section returns in the brass.
A sax soli follows, integrating a few more modern voicings in the vein of Slide Hampton.
Soloists then find their time. A solo section, easily passed between any available instruments, is based on the chords of the previous sections.
A short interlude, based on a bass-pedal figure, is the glue between soloists and the shout chorus.
The shout chorus evokes many tried and true swing rhythms and counter-lines, easily playable by high school students as well as professionals. |
