||"The Hymn" was written in 1993 by Tom Boras. This is an extremely eclectic jazz chart. There are many different styles and instrumental combinations that appear throughout the composition. It opens with a "Hendrix" style guitar stating the melody or Hymn and then it goes into a March-like Funk tempo. The Brass section makes a brass choir-like statement and then the band enters with a 3 against 4 rhythm..and all this before letter G where the group breaks into a medium swing. The swing/funk style predominates up to the 3/4 section. The chart has plenty of room for soloists and it holds together with all the seemingly disparate ingredients. It builds to very exciting ending. Highly recommended.
