"An American Hero" was written by Gregory C. Sylvester in 2001.
"An American Hero" follows the story of a young American pilot of World War II. The piece begins with a gigantic fanfare of brass and timpani to symbolize the roaring engines of a World War II fighter plane. In the second section the pilot realizes the loss of his fellow pilots and friends; he sees in perspective the horrors of war. This section is very slow and solemn, the chords flow evenly amongst each other as the melody leads off to the French horns, then to a floating trumpet solo. In conclusion of the second section, the ensemble raises dynamic as the young pilot returns back home along with his remaining fellow pilots. The piece grasps a huge climax as the opening theme is repeated and consequently finishes the piece. |
