||"Snow Day" for young jazz ensemble was written in 2000 by Ray Ames. "Snow Day" was written for my beginning Jazz Band on December 11th, 2000 when school was closed for a snow storm. It is a rock style piece built around a simple bass riff that is also reinforced in the trombones and the baritone sax. Rhythms are quarter notes and a few eighth notes, and ranges are very moderate. It can be handled by second year players having their first jazz experience. Rhythm section parts are easy, and a written alto sax solo is provided, but the solo section can be repeated as needed. Soloists are encouraged to improvise on a four chord, eight measure progression.
