"Hymn Suite for Brass" was arranged by Charles White in 2008. This suite contains three hymns (Sweet Hour Of Prayer; My Shepherd Will Supply My Need; Swing Down, Chariot’s Comin’) arranged for 2 Trumpets; 2 Horns; 2 Trombones; Euphonium and Tuba. The arranger writes " Everyone has at least one solo! If you played a whole brass choir suite without playing at least one solo, it would be very dull.
The first movement, "Sweet Hour Of Prayer" has a trumpet duet with a brass choir chord background that reminded me of church organ playing when I was a youngster.
The second movement, "My Shepherd Will Supply My Need" has a horn and euphonium solo that turns into a short duet one measure after "C". The second movement is short. I like short pieces , it makes the audience pay attention.
The third movement, "Swing Down, Chariot’s Comin’, " starts with a trombone solo. I wrote a solo for the two trumpet parts at letter "B". If they think they can ad lib something better between "B" and "C" go ahead. The same goes for the tuba solo at letter "C". Some musicians ad lib better than others, just make sure that the director goes along with it. (I always needed printed music)
