||THE BELLS OF LONDON
While remaining within playable ranges, “The Bells of London” challenges young band students to switch keys. This well-known song, dating back to seventeenth century England, musically mimics the sounds of several church bells “speaking” to each other. The story the bells toll, however, is somewhat sinister: it announces when an execution will take place. The lyrics refer both to moneychangers (who profited from the large crowds gathered to view the executions) and to repentance confessions. The song remains popular today as part of a children’s game that ends when one child is caught between the arms of two others.
