||"C. J." was written by Dr. Eric Schmitz for the Russell Scarbrough Big Band.
A straight-eighths ballad featuring flugelhorn (or trumpet) soloist, “C.J.” stands for Clay Jenkins, whose uniquely beautiful playing inspired its creation. The tempo is slow, but the harmonies are quite complex, so this is a good piece for a more-advanced improviser. Alto 1 and Tenor 1 double on Flute and Clarinet, respectively, while Bari plays Bass Clarinet throughout.
Solo flugelhorn part is up to a notated B above the staff; section parts only up to a G.
