||Left of Center
An advanced work for piano four hands, Left of Center was inspired by the pedagogical writings of German-American composer Stefan Wolpe and the music of American rock and roll songwriter and pianist Jerry Lee Lewis. Left of Center explores musical space through the use of registral displacement and the abrupt juxtaposition of conflicting gestures. From the opening pontillistic motive to the closing polyrhythmic texture, the constant pulse of the music drives this short piece to a frenzied climax. And as Lewis once said, “If I had it all to do over, I’d do the same thing again.” Left of Center is dedicated to pianist Eric Laughlin.
